I’ll tell you a story about how I sort of have hardwood floors in my house. And mind you these are the original floors from 1920, they are hardwood but those really thin slats that don’t look anything like the modern stuff. The previous owners had two destructive members of their household, their adult son and some cats. When the mother had moved out she let her son continue to live in the house with a harem of kitties, I’m really not sure how many felines there were, but it was a clutch of them to say the least.

Well apparently he wasn’t the most attentive person on the planet and the cats scratched and clawed at the floors, as well as having accidents on them that caused many unsightly stains and marks. In addition to the floors, they also left marks on the window sills, built-in cabinets, and even some walls from climbing up and down and scratching.

In addition to that, for reasons still unbeknownst to myself, the son started nailing extra full sized nails into the floors in one of the rooms of the house. Like something you would only see in the movies, he apparently had an obsession with driving nails and filled the floor with nails every few inches across the entire thing. I don’t mean to sound like I’m poking fun at him as he may have, well, most likely has mental issues. Granted he did drive the nails flat into the floor so it’s not like walking across a porcupine, but I don’t know if it could be refinished in such a state.

Anyhow, when the investment company who sold me the house bought it, they wanted to get it ready for sale as quickly and cheaply as possible. Because of that, they made the regrettable decision to simply paint over the hardwood instead of properly sanding and refinishing, or replacing it. And while that might work in some instances, they didn’t even bother to paint it correctly. I assume correctly would have included a primer below and a clear coat on top. Nope, they just slapped down a thin coat of brown as fast as they could.

So now fast forward to me living here for the last 5 years and in every single room, that thin coat of paint is chipping up. Where my desk chair sits, it’s actually worn an entire 3 foot circle of the paint off. It’s unsightly to say the least, but what’s more the chipped up pieces often get stuck to the bottom of a foot, sock, or shoe and end up being dragged all over the place. I was actually at a friends house a few weeks ago and noticed a little brown circle near where I was sitting. I picked it up and sure enough, it was a piece of the paint from my floors that had hitchhiked over to my pals place on the bottom of my shoe.

It’s such a shame too because in the spots where enough of the paint has worn off you can see the original hardwood from the 20’s shining through and it really is gorgeous. I’m stuck between doing the gritty work of somehow removing all the paint and refinishing the floors or leaving it as is to slowly unravel on it’s own accord. As far as the room full of nails, well, maybe one day I’ll have the funds to replace it or, I’ll just leave it as an interesting story to tell.

I’m determined to refinish instead of replace my unique flooring, but if you are in the market for a fresh floor this Lumber Liquidators giveaway is the perfect way for you to get a head start. I want to wish all of you lovely subscribers and fans the best of luck to be the winner.
