While much is known about Harley-Davidson and their iconic brand is a household name in America, another company with high-quality motorcycles proudly made in the USA typically goes unnoticed, and that company is Indian Motorcycles.
A Short History of Indian Motorcycle Co.
The Indian Motorcycle Co. was originally founded in 1897 as a bicycle manufacturer in Massachusetts, with the first motorcycles being sold in 1902. The companies early success was built primarily on producing competition motorcycles that were taking the top spots in races. Later they supplied the US government with motorcycles for use in WWI, which had the unintended side effect or starving dealers of inventory for civilians. And while post-war enthusiasm for motorcycling had grown, Indian lost it’s #1 spot to Harley-Davidson.
The government again used Indian during WWII, but this time in more limited numbers. After the war the enthusiasm for them never quite caught back on and production was decreased each year until 1948 when they were discontinued.
For the next 50 years, many companies attempted to revive the company but with limited success until 2003 when the Indian Motorcycle Company of America was reformed, and ultimately purchased in 2011 by Polaris. The current production is gaining traction in the market and reviving the classic models.
While I’m not personally a fan of traveling on 2-wheels, I know there’s a lot of you out there. I hope one of you is the proud winner of this contest and helps to revive the American enthusiasm for Indian motorcycles.
Let us know in the comments below if you own, or have ever owned, an Indian Motorcycle.
